Welcome to the Valparaiso
Public Library's website!

The Valparaiso Public Library serves the community of Valparaiso, Nebraska, which includes those who live in the Village itself and those who live around it, primarily in the 68065 ZIP code area. The Village population is about 600; the area population totals around 1500. Persons who live outside this area are welcome to use the library and also may apply for library cards.

For more information, drop in at 300 West 2nd in Valparaiso, phone us at 402-784-6141 (you can leave a message), or e-mail us at ValLibrary@WindStream.net.

The Library Board meets in the library on the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. Meetings are open to the public.

Celebrate LIBRI Week
April 24 - May 1

Many thanks to the adults and kids who decorated the library for the April 24-25 Libri Open Houses to show off the new Libri books and celebrate with chat and refreshments. If you didn't make it to the Open House, stop by soon to see these wonderful additions to our library.

The 80-some new books are for preschool through Grade 12 -- fiction and non-fiction, and covering a wide range of topics and genres.

We are grateful to the Libri Foundation and to the Valparaiso Women's Club, whose generous contributions made these additions to our library possible.

Our Friends Group
The Valparaiso
Women's Club

The Valparaiso Women's Club provides most of the funds the library receives to buy books and other media. The Women's Club has filled this generous role since its founding in 1916. Members include women from the Village of Valparaiso and the surrounding area and, in some cases, from other towns as well.

The group's primary fundraiser for the library, the Style Show Luncheon, occurs every fall, usually in early October. Members make and contribute the salads, sweet breads, sandwiches, and desserts; set up and elaborately decorate the tables (each one is unique); serve the food (and do the dishes and clean up); and model in the Style Show after the meal. In the months beforehand, members spend hours creating a large quilt (and usually several smaller quilted items) which is raffled off after the Style Show. Many local merchants and individuals also contribute numerous door prizes.

The group meets monthly during the school year in the basement of the Methodist Church in Valparaiso. Meetings are at 7:30 p.m. on the 3rd Thursday after the 3rd Wednesday of the month. New members always are welcome.

For more information, contact the co-president Jan Hygnstrom at (402) 784-9670.
